The Rising Star
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and WomenRising is honoring it with our annual candlelight vigil. Each October WomenRising holds a Candlelight Vigil for victims of domestic violence. The Vigil will celebrate women's survival and determination. The event will include a community resource forum from 4-5pm as well as an awards presentation, and an open forum for survivors to speak. The evening will finish with an inspirational and moving candle-lighting in recognition of victims and families as well as those who have lost their lives due to Domestic Violence.

The vigil is scheduled for Wednesday, October 10th from 4pm to 6pm at the Lincoln Park Administration Building (near Casino in the Park.) The event is free and open to the public. Anyone with an interest in celebrating the strides that have been made against Domestic Violence is encouraged to attend.

WomenRising's Domestic Violence program operates the only domestic violence shelter in Hudson county, a 24-hour domestic violence hotline, domestic violence counseling for women and children, domestic violence training for police departments and volunteers, domestic violence information sessions for various schools and groups, and court advocacy for domestic violence cases. Services also include 12 months of transitional housing and support programs for women and children affected by substance abuse and domestic violence.

For more information about the Domestic Violence Vigil call Charmaine at 201/333/5700 ext 521.
Fall is almost officially here! School has begun and we’re starting to think about the colder days approaching. To gear up, WomenRising’s Domestic Violence Shelter is in need of new sheet sets and comforters, all in twin size. This will ensure everyone has a comfy bed, especially when days are cold. For more info write akoenig@womenrising.org or call 201/333-5700 ext 537.

Unique Opportunity to Give:
If you are 70 1/2 or older, you have a unique opportunity this year to make a gift to WomenRising using your IRA transfer. The Pension Protection Act of 2006 allows IRA owners in this age bracket to donate tax-free gifts of up to $100,000 to the charity of their choice—but the Act ends on December 31, 2007. Under the current law, this may be the last year to give tax-free from your IRA to help improve the lives women and children.
You can purchase tickets to Macy’s Shop for a Cause by calling 201/333-5700 ext 537 or you can order them online at www.merchantamerica.com/womenrising/echopay/ (2 tickets/ $10 minimum- just make sure to include the address you want them sent to in the comments section if it’s different from your billing address!)

Recent Updates:
In the last month, a client got her GED and a full time job!
A daughter from a family who recently moved out made a point to stop in and say hello and to thank Project Home. She reported having a great summer and especially loving Camp Liberty.
The families are looking forward to an upcoming trip to go pumpkin picking– it will be the first time for many young residents and their moms. Project Home enjoys helping children experience the natural joys of childhood, family bonding, and togetherness.
