The Rising Star
Nelly* came to WomenRising in October for court-mandated domestic violence counseling following a battery incident. She was living in temporary housing with her son and looking for a permanent and an appropriate housing situation. Due to a medical condition DYFS would not allow her to live in her own apartment with her son. WomenRising helped to stabilize Nelly and her son then helped her to find suitable housing and daycare. Next WomenRising assisted her to sort through domestic violence and parenting issues. After 6 months of counseling Nelly begun attending a domestic violence support group. In addition, she is working with WomenRising’s Court Liaison Nancy Giron who helped her to represent herself in a series of custody, child support, and visitation hearings with great success. Nelly was able to find a suitable housing arrangement and with counselor encouragement and advocacy with her DYFS manager, she completed a parenting class and was able to find daycare for her son. Finally after satisfying all DYFS requirements her DYFS case is now closed. Nelly tells us that she feels much happier and is excited about every new step her son takes. She is even thinking about taking classes at Hudson County Community College. Nelly continues to utilize WomenRising services as on a regular basis. We are pleased with her perseverance and progress. We thank you for your support!

WomenRising’s Work Socialization program gives youth a seven-week summer work experience with jobs in the community. Each participant works 20 hours per week in a job selected to match their interests, among this year’s assignments were Horizon Health Center and Jersey City Recreation Dept. The youth receive a weekly stipend paid by WomenRising. Donations are welcome to help support this program.

We have 7 youth participating in this year’s Work Socialization Program. On Tuesday, August 7th our youth volunteered to participate in the Jersey City National Night Out event. Night out is an event to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs to strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

Participants helped to set up and decorate the park for the event. Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy presented each youth with a Certificate of Appreciation and thanked them for their role in improving the quality of life in Jersey City. We are very proud of our youth for wanting to give of themselves and their time for such a wonderful cause. Keisher Harris, Work Socialization Program Coordinator, works with our youth to help them understand that they can make a difference.
