The Rising Star
We were thrilled to learn that the Wachovia Regional foundation has approved a ‘Neighborhood Implementation Grant’ for $750,000 over the course of five years for WomenRising Inc.

This grant will support the implementation of the community revitalization plan created by the Bergen Communities United group for the Bergen Hill Neighborhood of Jersey City, NJ. In particular this grant is designed to support a particular component of the plan that will address the education/training, job placement/ retention and economic development needs of the community.

The plan was created to provide a roadmap for the revitalization of the neighborhood and to identify goals and strategies to improve the quality of life to children and families in Jersey City for years to come.

The Wachovia Foundation believes that they can maximize their community development impact by helping to link various organizations together for potential strategic partnerships. This will help leverage WomenRising to receive additional funding from the other agencies and corporate parties as well.

WomenRising and its collaborative partners formed the comprehensive resident-driven plan for the “Bergen Communities United (BCU)” neighborhood of Jersey City. The plan was completed in October 2005 by the BCU steering Committee members plus more than 300 neighborhood residents. The BCU is a continuously operating stakeholders’ collaborative working together to identify common interests, problems and solutions.

The grant will enable WomenRising to further our goal of helping families achieve self-sufficiency, participate in the local economy, influence local industries to expand employment opportunities, facilitate people's entry into the workforce, and provide support for people through the early stages of employment.
Summer is in full swing! Even though it’s a time of year when a lot of people take a break and relax a little, that’s not the case at WomenRising! We know that warm weather can make people irritable, violent, and depressed. And with children out of school, parents can become very stressed out. WomenRising’s staff knows no rest when it comes to making sure families are safe.

Our Group Home is Getting a Makeover!
It’s an exciting time for our Group Home for Girls. The group home is a safe, therapeutic home for teen females who cannot live with their families.

Through a program called “Community Team Works” at Goldman Sachs, our Group Home will be getting a new look. Volunteers from CTW are coming two days to paint the kitchen, the dining room, the living room, the entrance, the stairway and hall, as well as each girl’s individual room. We’re very excited to see the results!

In addition to the painting, the Group Home recently received funding from a mother/daughter group called Mothers And Daughters Community Action Program (MADCAP) to get each of the girls fans for their rooms. We got them just in time, before the really hot weather struck! They’re also putting together laundry baskets, gift certificates, and more for the girls.

A Unique Opportunity to Give
If you are 70 1/2 or older, you have a unique opportunity this year to make a gift to WomenRising using your IRA transfer. The Pension Protection Act of 2006 allows IRA owners in this age bracket to donate tax-free gifts of up to $100,000 to the charity of their choice—but the Act ends on December 31, 2007. Under the current law, this may be the last year to give tax-free from your IRA to help improve the lives of countless women and families.

Sponsoring Students

We’d like to thank Brown Brothers Harriman for their partnership to make sure that 50 needy children at WomenRising have a backpack and all the supplies they need for the upcoming school year. Their program encourages employees to pick a child to ’sponsor’ by providing essential school supplies so students can achieve success in their educational settings.

We do have more children who are in need of back-to-school essentials for anyone interested in ‘sponsoring a student’. It’s easy! We’ll send you the list for an individual child. From that list you’ll purchase the child’s supplies, put them in a new backpack, then bring the backpack to our main offices at 270 Fairmount Ave or arrange for pickup. Please consider participating in this worthwhile program. If you are interested or need more information, call Andrea at 201/333-5700 ext 537 or write to akoenig@womenrising.org
